Last week has brought two big announcements regarding two Star Wars games: one old favourite and a brand new game currently in development.
Star Wars Eclipse
The latter was the unexpected revelation of a trailer for Star Wars Eclipse. We have known for a long time that a new Star Wars game was in development by Quantic Dreams. Now we have the name and a trailer along with a few basic facts.
The game will be set during the High Republic era – several centuries before the events of the films. As you can see for yourselves, we are going to visit the blossoming rich multicultural environment of this “golden era” of the Republic. The Jedi are plenty, the Republic is thriving which surely gives opportunity for political machinations behind the scenes and the Outer Rim is ripe for exploration with new planets, species, opportunities and dangers around every corner.
Mashing It Together
We know that Star Wars Eclipse will be set in an uncharted section of the Outer Rim and that it will feature “multiple, charismatic playable characters, each with their own morality, personality, motivations, and impact upon each other and the story at large” (as stated on the game’s official website). It seems obvious that we are looking at a “choices matter”, open-world-type action adventure game.
The trailer certainly looks amazing, cleverly calling on the aesthetics of the prequels but also The Mandalorian (the Outer Rim hive-of-activity atmosphere) or Rogue One (the masked figures, identified as Anomids, resembling the cultists in the streets of Jedha) and combines them with the more traditional Star Wars iconography (such as in the shot where presumably Republic starfighters, reminiscent of classic X-Wings, approach the Trade Federation ship). It is like taking the best of each era and combining it together to create a world that really looks like Star Wars.
For the game itself however we will have to wait, possibly for quite some time.
SWTOR 10th Anniversary
The second Star Wars gaming news this week on the other hand relates to a long-time classic MMORPG. Star Wars: The Old Republic is celebrating its tenth anniversary this December. This was supposed to be marked by the release of a big expansion but that unfortunately had to be delayed to ensure balancing the new content, as the changes will be quite massive. Currently the expected release has been pushed to 15th February 2022.
Right now the players can still celebrate the anniversary with in-game events starting from Tuesday 14th December, the traditional Life Day celebration and the return of the anniversary vendors, with all up-to-date anniversary rewards available for free. There will be also a double XP boost between 20th December and 4th January.
